چکیده

In this paper an agent-based social contagion model with an underlying dynamic network is proposed and analysed. In contrast to the existing social contagion models, the strength of links between agents changes gradually rather than abruptly based on a threshold mechanism. An essential feature of the model – the ability to form clusters – is extensively investigated in the paper analytically and by simulation. Specifically, the distribution of clusters in random and scale-free networks is investigated, the dynamics of links within and between clusters are determined, the minimal distance between two clusters is identified. Moreover, model abstraction methods are proposed by using which aggregated opinion states of clusters of agents can be approximated with a high accuracy. These techniques also improve the computational efficiency of social contagion models (up to 6 times).

Can Social Contagion Help Global Health ‘Jump the Shark’?; Comment on “How to Facilitate Social Contagion?”

The instrumental use of social networks has become a central tenet of international health policy and advocacy since the Millennium project. In asking, ‘How to facilitate social contagion?’, Karl Blanchet of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine therefore reflects not only on the recent success, but also hints to growing challenges; the tactics of partnerships, alliances and platfo...

Network of connections is an informal institution, which affects agents’ decisions as well as their outcomes. Dominant neoclassical paradigm has neglected the role of connections and links, due to its atomistic view, while social networks can play a crucial role with regards to economic and social phenomena, such as migration, job finding, crime network, learning, financial crisis contagion, mi...

How to Facilitate Social Contagion?

Achieving the Millennium Development Goals has proven to be a real challenge. Providing evidence on cost-effective interventions did not prove to be sufficient to secure the trust of national authorities, health care providers and patients. Introducing change in a health system requires a good understanding of the relationships between the actors of the system. Social network analysis can provi...

Complex social contagion makes networks more vulnerable to disease outbreaks

Social network analysis is now widely used to investigate the dynamics of infectious disease spread. Vaccination dramatically disrupts disease transmission on a contact network, and indeed, high vaccination rates can potentially halt disease transmission altogether. Here, we build on mounting evidence that health behaviors - such as vaccination, and refusal thereof - can spread across social ne...
